Under 14 Girls win Silverware in the Surrey Cup Finals Day
On Sunday the Ealing / Richmond Girls Under 14 played their final
15-a-side games of the season in the Surrey Cup Finals Day at Cobham
RFC. Following the Surrey Cup group stage in which the girls had won all
but one of their games, two wins on the day would see them take home the
Surrey Cup Bowl.
Unfortunately a sluggish first half against the hosts saw the girls 0-24
down, having been guilty of standing off their opponents and conceding a
number of cheap tries run in from deep. Thankfully, the girls restored
some pride in the second half, being much more competitive in open play,
dominant in the scrum and scoring two tries courtesy of Ula. However
the final score was 12-29 .
The defeat meant that the girls would play their next match for the
Surrey Tankard, against Wimbledon RFC, a team we had kicked off the
campaign against with a nail-biting 25-24 victory back in January.
Sunday’s match was a very different affair, with the Ealing / Richmond
girls dominating from the kick off, strong at the breakdown and
exploiting the space out wide. A score-line of 36-0 did not flatter the
girls, with scores coming from Cam (2), Catherine, Ula and Charlotte
(2), with Catherine adding 3 conversions.
The presentation of the tankard was a great moment for the team, who
have come along hugely this season which was their first of 15-a-side
rugby. All eyes now turn to this coming weekend at the Worthing 10s
festival, which will the first ever tour for the Ealing Girls Youth
Section.
